Athlete Spotlight

Once a month, we're going to spotlight one of our members so you guys can know them better. Our first athlete is Oscar Fernandez. Oscar is the very first Big Bang member. He came in before the box was even open and he's been a great member ever since. Since he started working out here, he's been improving greatly. He also has gone on to get certified through the Crossfit Level 1 Certification Course and is now one of our interns. If you don't know him yet, you can easily spot him with the original Nike "Crossfit" shoe.

What do you do for a living?

I'm an electrician.

What made you start Crossfit?

I was looking in to getting back in shape since I had fallen out of my gym routine but was looking for something more exciting since the gym thing can get quite repetitive,my older brother would bring up CrossFit quite a bit so I figured I would give it a shot.

How long have you been doing Crossfit?

I've been doing CrossFit for 3 yrs

What did you do before Crossfit?

Before CrossFit I would do the typical gym thing and have always enjoyed sports and outdoor activities

What is your favorite workout?

My personal favorite workout is Fran. It's a short one but a painful one that always pushes me that extra bit!!!

What is your favorite movement?

My favorite movement is overhead squats.

What is your least favorite movement?

My least favorite movement is handstand push-ups

What is your diet like?

One thing CrossFit has is the constant help of your coaches and athletes that feed off each other when it comes to throwing weight around, mobility, and, to me what I've realized is just as important, nutrition! I stay away from sugar and processed food to a minimum. For the most part, I base my eating off of the zone plan! I do enjoy a pizza and beer every now and then!

What is your biggest milestone so far in your Crossfit Journey?

One of my biggest goals I've reached so far is dropping down to under 20% body fat!

What keeps you motivated?

Crossfit is not just about working out. It's about a healthy lifestyle. I look forward to doing outdoor activities like snorkeling, hiking, mountain biking, paintball. They all involve you being in descent shape and in a healthy state of mind. I also look forward to being able to keep up with my daughter and the activities she's going to choose in the years to come. In long term, I hope to enjoy a nice long life, free of prescription pills and doctor visits!!!

What advice would you give to new people coming into Crossfit?

My advice to newcomers is to be patient, be consistent, and take advantage of the resources you have in your box. Most importantly, have fun in this new journey you've chosen!
