  • Tomorrow, December 17th, is our annual Holiday Potluck Party! Bring your favorite dish and you better not show up in your gym clothes!!!!

  • Our Toy Drive is still going on. We thank your for the gifts so far, but let's try to fill those boxes!!! We'll be personally delivering the gifts to Children's Hospital Los Angeles, so the last day to donate a gift will be on December 22nd.

  • December Referral Program is still going on. Bring a friend that hasn't been to our box before, and if they sign up, you'll get a free month!

  • On January 21st, Miranda Oldroyd will be coming to our box to give us a 2017 Reality Check Nutrition Seminar. Spots are filling up so if you're interested, please see one of the coaches.

December Spotlight Athlete

This months, and the last Spotlight Athlete of 2016, is Bertha Navarette. Bertha started with us in one of our fundamental group classes. Since she's started, she's shown some huge progress. She's motivated and dedicated to reach her goals. She's a consistent member of the 7pm group class and she always has a great attitude, even when it comes to movements she doesn't like. Let's get to know Bertha a little more.

What is your occupation?

Who introduced you to Crossfit and what made you start?

I was introduced to Crossfit by a cousin out in Mexico, but I never really looked into finding a box near me because it just seemed so out of my reach and abilities. Fast forward a few years, my bff Elizabeth Jimenez joined a beginners class at BBCF in January of 2016. She invited me to join then but, again, my fears and doubts kept me from signing up. However, after returning from a vacation to Cancun in March, I decided it was time to give it a try…let’s just say those pictures are not suitable for public display. I started the beginners class in April 2016.

What did you do before Crossfit?

Before Crossfit I would walk and run a few miles (occasionally) out at Santa Fe Dam. I could never do it consistently because it wasn’t enjoyable. I just did it because I knew I had to do some type of exercise. Other than the occasional cardio, I NEVER did any type of gym or sports – as many of you already know I’m not the most coordinated person, so yeah, the lack of hand eye coordination prevents me from playing sports and gyms were just too overwhelming.

How long have you been doing Crossfit?

I’m proud and happy to say I completed my 8th month doing Crossfit! **patting myself** 8 months of consistent physical activity is quite an accomplishment for me – I’ve never been able to stick to some type of activity longer than a few weeks.

What's your favorite workout?

I don’t know if I can call any of the WODs my favorite, but I can tell you that I kind of enjoyed “Filthy 50”. I think it was the variety of movements all in one workout and that it was a long workout. I enjoy long workouts more that short ones.

What's your favorite movement? Least favorite movement?

The clean and split jerk are my favorite movements. I’m not too bad with those…they’re not perfect but those movements come a little easier to me. My least favorite is the SNATCH. I think I’ve only been able to do one snatch successfully, but one day I’ll make the coaches proud.

What are your current goals?

I have many goals…where do I start? I want to be able to do pull ups, toes to bar, HSPU, master double unders, conquer the rope climb, and successfully snatch at least 65# (for now), oh and I almost forgot the main one… a six pack! It’s a lot to ask for but hopefully I have several years on me to accomplish them.

What has been you're biggest milestone so far in your Crossfit journey?

My biggest milestone I’ve got to say is the strength I’ve built up until now. I definitely see a difference from the beginning to now. I’ve had several mini-milestones thanks to the support and encouragement of all coaches and interns. Just the other day I overcame my fear of box jumps! I was able to do the workout with a 20” box!

Who or what inspires you to do Crossfit, and what keeps you motivated?

The driving force that keeps me going to Crossfit is my health. Before Crossfit, I suffered from back problems, which is why I feared lifting weights. Ever since I started, I noticed my back problems are practically non-existent. It’s also a huge stress reliever! So no stress = a happy person! Motivation also comes from the results I see and most importantly from the awesome staff and friends I’ve made at BBCF! I don’t think I would be motivated to keep going if I didn’t like the people or the atmosphere where I workout.

What's your favorite cheat meal?

My favorite cheat mealS (plural) are my mom’s chiles rellenos, In-N-Out burgers and fries, and cheese pizza.

What advice would you give to new people coming in?

My advice for new people is to be consistent, leave fear and intimidation at the door! When you see the positive results in your life - all you’ll want to do is keep getting better and stronger.
