October Athlete Spotlight

This month we'd like to introduce you to one of our morning members, Carolina aka Caro. She's definitely one of our early birds that come in at 5am. Caro's been with us for a while now and it seems like every day she's getting better and stronger. Let's meet one of our hardest working members.

Who introduced you to Crossfit and what made you start?

I had reached a point where I became very bored going to the gym and was looking for motivation in staying active and reaching my fitness goals. I was looking though Yelp and came across Big Bang Crossfit. I called to reserve a spot the next day. I actually had not heard of Crossfit and I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

What did you do before Crossfit?

I was going to the gym and working on strength training and cardio but I became so bored with it that I was struggling to drag myself there everyday. I tried Pilates, yoga, Zumba, kickboxing, boot camp, spinning and even home workout videos like P90x and Insanity. I even got a personal trainer but I was still struggling with staying motivated to workout and just couldn’t find anything that kept me interested.

How long have you been doing Crossfit?

Technically I started back in summer of 2014. However, I only went for a few months because I became pregnant with Sofia and I was considered a high-risk pregnancy. So, I had to stop but after having Sofia I returned in October 2015. So, this month I completed a full year of consistently going to Crossfit.

What's your favorite workout?

Annie was a big accomplishment for me this year. I struggled so much to be able to do double unders. It took a lot of practice, failures, frustration and patience to finally be able to do them. So, I was very excited to be able to complete Annie RX.

What's your favorite movement? Least favorite movement?

My favorite movements are walking lunges and air squats and my least favorite is thrusters and jerks.

What are your current goals?

I want to get stronger, faster and leaner. Prior to Crossfit my fitness goal was always to lose weight and be skinny. Crossfit has changed my perception of body image and I no longer yearn to be skinny but instead to be strong and healthy. I have come to really appreciate my body and all that it is capable of doing. I don’t obsess over the scale anymore and I now focus on my mini accomplishments and progress.

What has been your biggest milestone so far in your Crossfit journey?

I had a rough pregnancy with Sofia and was diagnosed with severe preeclampsia. I was told that I could lose her or could also die at any moment and had to be strictly monitored. I was in the hospital for 5 weeks stuck in a bed and felt powerless over the fate of my baby and I. It was emotionally and mentally the most difficult experience of my life. Thankfully, she was born healthy and with no complications. The recovery was also difficult and I had gained a total of 60 pounds. So my biggest milestone would be starting Crossfit after going through all of that and sticking to it everyday for the past year and losing all the weight. Starting was difficult, it seemed like a mountain in front of me and at the time it felt impossible to overcome, but I focused on one day at a time and now I can’t believe it’s been a year! It went by fast!

Who or what inspires you to do Crossfit, and what keeps you motivated?

My beast of a husband motivates me! It’s always fun when I beat him at a WOD! My children inspire me. I want to be healthy so I can watch them grow up and be there for them. Also, just the appreciation of what my body can do and it’s ability to do it. When a workout gets really tough and I feel like giving up I just remember that feeling of being stuck in that hospital bed and that makes me push harder. I don’t ever want to be stuck in a hospital bed again. So I will do what I can now to try to prevent that as much as possible. I like that Crossfit pushes me mentally and physically to my limits and beyond. The best feeling is being able to finish a workout that is grueling.

What's your favorite cheat meal?

Grilling some carne asada at home and making some bomb burritos!

What advice would you give to new people coming in?

Don’t feel intimidated. I hear that a lot from people who are curious to try it out. The coaches know what they are doing and are great at modifying the workouts to each person’s levels. I will never forget the first day back to Crossfit after my pregnancy. I cried (in my car on the way home) out of frustration of not being able to keep up and of how hard everything felt but all I thought was, well…I’m not going to get any better at it by not showing up so now I have to come back tomorrow!
