September Member Spotlight

This month, we'd like you to get to know, the one and only, Kalvin. Kal has been with us since the early beginnings of Big Bang. One of our strongest and well rounded athletes. You'll usually see him at the 5pm classes yelling "DIG DEEP" to his fellow members. He's one of the most optimistic people you'll meet.

Who introduced you to Crossfit and what made you start?

I was introduced to Crossfit about 5 years ago through an old friend that I knew from riding motorcycles. He was trying to explain it to me, but he himself had a hard time explaining it also, since he had just joined. I checked it out for a couple classes and was instantly hooked. I loved the challenge and being competitive with my friend (and new friends that I met through Crossfit).

What did you do before Crossfit?

I was big on cycling, so I did a lot of mountain biking and road biking. I also played basketball 2-3 a week, but had to start giving that up due to the impact it put on my knee (strangely, is not a problem anymore since I started Crossfit).

How long have you been doing Crossfit?

Like I mentioned before, I've been doing Crossfit for about 5 years. I did take a year off when I broke my hand in a motorcycle accident and another couple months here and there when trying to find different boxes and gyms.

What's your favorite workout?

I have no specific favorite.. but movements with Rowing, box jumps and wall balls (those movement are in my favor, due to my brute strength and height! lol jk)

What's your favorite movement? Least favorite movement?

Favorite movement is the Clean. Worst movement would be the overhead squat. Eff that shit.

What are your current goals?

My current goals... is to stay healthy. My lifestyle, be it hiking, camping, motorcycle racing, etc, requires my body to be in a healthy and strong state. Crossfit helps me do that. It helps clear my head after a long day of work and relieves stress, all good for my health. Oh yeah.. maybe start stringing butterfly pull ups and a sub 5 minute Fran time.

What has been you're biggest milestone so far in your Crossfit journey?

Ring muscle ups. I never expected myself to be doing gymnast movements, ever, in my life.

Who or what inspires you to do Crossfit, and what keeps you motivated?

I want to wipe my own ass when I'm old, play with my kids when I'm old, play with my grand kids when i'm old, and still do ALL the stuff I love, when I'm old. What also keeps me motivated is trying to get a 6 pack!

What's your favorite cheat meal?

You can't really call it a cheat meal when I have it every week already... but it would have to be sushi or taco's.

What advice would you give to new people coming in?

Take it easy! Everything will be pretty intimidating at first, but keep going at it, don't give up, even if its hard. You WILL be better at it if you stay consistent and keep showing up. And before you know it, you'll want to show up everyday, cause its the only thing you look forward to, everyday! Have fun.
